In 2010, Waste Connections of Canada acquired the Coronation Landfill. Since then, the company has made significant investments to improve operations throughout the site.
We are continuously reviewing and updating our operational programs around the landfill to prevent nuisance issues such as gulls, dust, noise, litter and traffic from impacting our neighbours and the community. Waste Connections of Canada is committed to being a good neighbour and a responsible company.
One of the local operational challenges of landfill management at the site is wind. At times the wind can blow in excess of 60 kilometres an hour for sustained periods of time. This can blow litter around the site and, in some instances, off site.
We have a proactive litter control system to prevent the spread of litter on and off site which includes the following:
We continue to have a regular group of litter pickers at the landfill each day picking up any materials and maintaining the property, as well as hiring additional to support us following high wind incidents.
In the event some materials do leave our landfill, we are committed to having our litter pickers go to these properties to clean up the litter by as soon as possible, subject to the landowner’s permission to access.
The construction of the landfill cells adheres to rigorous regulations by Alberta Environment and Parks for the design and operation of landfills to protect the environment and human health in and around the site. The development of the cells involves the use of advanced liner systems with recompacted clay, along with the installation of a geo membrane liner, to protect the ground water.
The landfill cells also use an advanced leachate containment, collection and treatment technologies to ensure the protection of groundwater. The leachate, when water runs through the waste materials, is collected through a network of pipes at the bottom of the landfill and is temporarily stored on-site. The leachate is then sent off-site to a licensed facility for treatment and disposal.
